Martine Batchelor
Buddhist writer and lay meditation teacher Martine Batchelor will be offering an online retreat, “Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation,” from 20 April to 14 May. The course will comprise four one-hour classes on the Wednesday of each week, including an explanation of and practical instructions on mindfulness, a guided meditation, and suggested exercises to facilitate continuation of the practice in daily life. A live discussion will be held each Saturday.
Each module will be made available at 2 p.m. EDT on the dates specified below and can be viewed on demand any time after release. The interactive sessions are live and can be accessed on the dates and times specified. They will be recorded and made available for those who cannot make them.
Module 1: What is mindfulness? - Wed 20 April
In the first class, Martine will present mindfulness as “caring and careful.” The guided meditation will be mindfulness of the breath.

Module 2: How to meditate? - Wed 27 April
The second class will present the basis of Buddhist meditation—concentration and enquiry (samatha and vipassana). The guided meditation will be mindfulness of the body.

Module 3: Mindfulness and compassion - Wed 4 May
The third class will look at the connection between mindfulness and compassion. The practice of the beneficial qualities (brahmaviharas)—loving kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity—will be explained. The guided meditation will be loving-kindness meditation with phrases.

Module 4: Daily life practice - Wed 11 May
The fourth class will show how to cultivate meditation in daily life. It will consider mindfulness at work and in relationship, and also the importance of meditative listening in our communication. The guided meditation will be on listening to sounds mindfully.
