Nepal's PM to inaugurate National Buddhist Conference

SAPTARI, Nepal -- Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai is scheduled to inaugurate the 11th National Buddhist Conference to be held in Rajbiraj, the headquarters of Saptari district.

The two-day conference will take place at the Raj Stadium in Rajbiraj from January 5. The theme of the conference is – The Buddha's Birthplace: Land of Peace, Nepal.

According to the Dharmodaya Sabha, the organizers of the conference, all the preparations for the national Buddhist conference have been completed. Welcome arches and gates have been erected at different places in the district headquarters, Rajbiraj. The town has been specially decorated for the event.

The ambassadors and clergymen from Japan, China, Thailand and Myanmar, among other countries, will attend the conference, said Subarna Shakya, coordinator of the Conference Organizing Main Committee.

More than 5,000 people, including the office-bearers of the Sabha's 42 district branches, the life members and distinguished Buddhist scholars are expected to participate in the conference.

The conference will discuss working papers on Buddhism. Various tableaus depicting the different facets of Buddhism will also be organised on the occasion, according to Ratna Man Shakya, general secretary of the Dharmodaya Sabha.
