This program offers quality teaching and in-depth analyses of the Buddhist tradition from textual, doctrinal, and historical perspectives. It aims to explore the application of Buddhist teachings in modern societies and provides background knowledge for a critical review of Buddhism in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the Asian region. Topics of study range from the history and doctrines of different Buddhist traditions to contemporary Buddhism and Buddhism as applied in counseling, palliative care, and psychotherapy, with particular reference to current scholarly research.

The school year begins in September 2015 and the closing date for applications is 17 March 2015. Enquiries can be directed to buddhism@hku.hk or (852) 3917 2847.

Course feedback

“This program has enhanced my understanding and practice of Buddhism, leading me to achieve a higher level of inner peace and happiness.” (Ben Kwong; Chief Operating Officer, KGI Asia Ltd.; graduate of 2004)

“MBS is the most enlightening course that I have taken. I studied Buddhism as a philosophy, a religion, a way of living and more. . . .” (Josephine Ma; solicitor & mediator; graduate of 2004)

“The MBS Program has exposed me to a new world of Buddhism: a much deeper understanding of what the Buddha had done and said, of the fundamental spirit of Buddhism, and of the Buddhist way of looking at life. I am a changed man, for the better, I believe.” (Lam Woon-kwong; Convenor of the Non-Official Members of the Executive Council; graduate of 2007)

“Within the Centre of Buddhist Studies a dynamic academic exchange is found that creates a dialogue between the ancient and the modern, the east and the west, and between the mundane and transcendent. Surely this dynamic is unique among institutions throughout the world, for it is brought about not only through the professors and students, but by the community as a whole.” (Anthony Robert Scott; graduate of 2012 from Canada)
