Hoa Nghiem Temple, a Vietnamese Mahayana temple situated in Melbourne’s southeastern suburb of Springvale, has recently completed the first of two phases of construction of its new community and cultural center. Phase one comprises the community hall, complete with kitchen and a dining hall with a capacity for five hundred, and a Dharma school with ten classrooms. |

An historic conclave that addressed the Vinaya (monastic discipline) was held in India’s capital, New Delhi, earlier this month. The two-day conference concluded on 19 March and was attended by HH the Dalai Lama, the former prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile Samdhong Rinpoche, Sri Lankan Buddhist leaders, and monks from both Tibet and Sri Lanka, including members of the Asgiri Chapter (a division of the Sri Lankan monastic order Siam Nikaya) and the president of the Mahabodhi Society. |

The archaeological team working at the Bhamala Buddhist archaeological complex in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, has discovered a large statue of the Buddha in parinirvana, said to be 14–15 meters long, as well as more than 500 other ancient Buddhist artifacts. The massive discovery has been termed “a wealth of history and treasure dating back 2,000 years” (Ancient Origins). |

The Dalai Lama is to mark his 80th birthday, which falls on 6 July this year, with a three-day Global Compassion Summit. The event is being presented by independent non-profit Friends of the Dalai Lama in partnership with The University of California, Irvine (UCI) and Irvine-based non-profit Center for Living Peace, and will be held from 5–7 July. Tickets go on sale at the summit’s official website on 2 April. |

The University of Michigan, which has one of North America’s largest Buddhist Studies programs, has received a gift of US$2 million to establish a Thai Professorship of Theravada Buddhism, believed to be the first chair of its kind in the world. The gift was from U-M alumnus Amnuay Viravan, who is the former deputy prime minister, finance minister, and foreign minister of Thailand, and was matched by the Crown Property Bureau of Thailand’s Ministry of Finance. The chair will be housed in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. |

In both places he recited brief consecration prayers. On reaching the newly constructed Lungrik Jamphel Ling Institute, with Tai Situ Rinpoche beside him, His Holiness cut the ribbon at the door and proceeded directly to the back of the hall where he recited consecrating verses before the statues of Marpa Lotsawa, Manjushri, Buddha Shakyamuni, Guru Rinpoche and Situ Panchen, Chökyi Jungney. |

Upper Bhattu, Himachal Pradesh, India, 11 March 2015 - Well-wishers, Tibetan and foreign were gathered outside the gate to His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s residence to see him off this morning. Other small groups were waiting see him as he drove down the bumpy Dharamsala roads. Outside Gyutö Tantric College more than 100 monks waited to greet him as he passed, white silk scarves and incense in their hands. At Gopalpur, the entire population of the TCV School, hundreds of children and staff lined the road for 200 metres or more, smiles on their faces and their hands folded together in respect. |

On 16 January and 13 February this year, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in the USA conducted two mindfulness meditation retreats under the heading “The Practice of Mindfulness: A Retreat to Promote Self-Care for the Professional Nurse, Educator, and Leader, to Understand the Role of Mindfulness Meditation to Enhance the Delivery of Nursing Care.” Both sessions, which were held at the University Club and included mindful sitting, walking, and movement along with yoga and deep relaxation, were conducted by Pittsburgh-based psychologist Katie Hammond Holtz. |

In a ground-breaking step forward for the development of bhikkhuni ordination in the Theravada tradition, a Sri Lankan monk has pledged to establish a Pirivena (monastic college) for nuns. According to the Daily News, Venerable Kirama Wimalajothi Thera was planning to lay the foundation stone of the Pirivena at Dekanduwala Buddhist monastery, Horana, on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8 March. This will be the first time in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka that a Pirivena has been established for Buddhist nuns. |

Dharamsala, HP, India, 5 March 2015 - Since it was the 15th day of the first Tibetan month, the full moon day, early this morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama joined the assembled monks and nuns in the Tsuglagkhang at Thekchen Chöling for the bi-monthly Sojong or ‘restoration and purification’ ceremony. At about 8 o’clock he was escorted down to the courtyard in front of the temple, beneath a ceremonial golden umbrella. While most of the monks and nuns stayed upstairs in the temple, where they could follow the proceedings on a video feed, the temple courtyard was packed with lay-people; Tibetans and visitors from many parts of the world. |

Starting on 16 April, the University of Hamburg’s Numata Center for Buddhist Studies, in cooperation with the Women in Buddhism Study Initiative, is offering an online course on “Women in Indian Buddhism.” The course will explore the situation of women during different periods in the history of Indian Buddhism and compare it with other Indian religions. It consists of a series of 13 lectures by a group of international scholars, who will present their latest research. |

Archaeologists in Jaipur District in the Indian state of Odisha have unearthed a number of ancient Buddhist sculptures. According to the Odisha Sun Times, the renowned Buddhist researcher and historian and the principal of Sahaspur College, Dr. Harish Chandra Prusty, discovered the sculptures on the premises of Baujang Naga mutt in Bikramtiran panchayat under Badachana block in Jaipur. The local daily reported that Dr. Prusty began his excavation and research of the premises after a 40-meter-square structure made of baked brick and stone was found. Following the discovery, Dr. Prusty told the Odisha Sun Times that the brick sculptures unearthed there bear a resemblance to others discovered in Udayagiri, Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri, Nalanda, Bodhgaya, Sarnath, and Nagarjunkonda, and can therefore be dated to the same period. |

Khyentse Foundation (KF) and Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in India have jointly announced the establishment of a new professorship at the latter’s Department of Pali, Buddhist Literature, and Culture. According to a statement issued by KF on 8 February, KF will sponsor the Visiting Professorship program to teach and conduct research on various areas of Buddhist Studies under the three major Buddhist traditions: Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. With this initiative, both KF and SPPU hope to provide comprehensive Buddhist teachings to the several hundred local and foreign students studying under the department. |

Ruth Denison, one of the first female vipassana teachers in America and the first Buddhist teacher in the United States to lead an all-female meditation retreat, passed away on the morning of 26 February at the age of 92. Denison suffered a stroke earlier this month, and spent her last days cared for by a small group of dedicated students at her Dhamma Dena vipassana center in California. In keeping with her end-of-life instructions, she received no medical intervention, including intravenous fluids. |
